Please tell us why you chose this laboratory?
The reason I became interested in Mori Laboratory was that it specializes in information security. My interest in cybersecurity began in high school after watching a drama featuring the activities of white-hat hackers. Until my third year as an undergraduate, I broadly studied computer science in the Faculty of Information Science and Technology. When it was time to choose a lab in my fourth year, I found Mori Laboratory, which delves deeply into security.
When I visited the lab before applying, I saw many seniors who inspired me to think, “I want to be like them!” Additionally, I learned that the lab offers many opportunities to present at international conferences. Since one of my goals is to be active on an international stage, I chose Mori Laboratory without hesitation.
Please tell us about the research you are currently working on.
I am conducting research on corporate privacy compliance, focusing particularly on analyzing privacy policies disclosed by companies on their websites. Companies collect and utilize users’ personal information for service provision purposes. They disclose the purposes of data collection and methods of utilization through privacy policies to enhance user understanding and comply with regulations.
However, the landscape of businesses using personal data is rapidly changing, making it challenging to update privacy policies appropriately. Additionally, requirements of the law necessitate detailed and complex disclosures, further complicating the issue.
I am conducting this research with the aim of resolving these challenges and striving towards a society where users can use services conveniently with peace of mind.
Please give us some comments on what motivated you to go on to a doctoral program, what are the benefits of doing so, and any words of advice you have for students who are thinking about going on to a doctoral program.
I am currently affiliated with a company and pursuing my doctoral studies as a working professional at Mori Laboratory. While working as a researcher, I have come to desire enrollment in a doctoral program to further grow and excel in my career. I chose Mori Laboratory for my doctoral studies because I enjoyed engaging in research discussions with Professor Mori during my undergraduate and master’s studies. With the support of Professor Mori and colleagues from my company, the barriers to enrollment were minimal. Being affiliated with both the company and Waseda University has expanded my opportunities for research discussions and increased my interactions with a broader network of people.
Please tell us about your future path and goals.
I want to be a researcher who excels globally in the field of privacy. Currently, my research is focusing on privacy policies, but I aim to broaden my scope to investigate and analyze what measures companies should take regarding privacy in the future. In terms of international recognition, I wish to increase my presentations at international conferences.
Furthermore, I believe that the significance of my research lies in its practical application within companies. Therefore, I want my research findings to be utilized effectively in business.
Please give a message to underclassmen and preparatory students.
If you find research fascinating, please consider pursuing a doctoral program! You have the option to enter a doctoral program immediately after completing your master’s degree, or you can follow a path similar to mine by working while pursuing a doctorate. Observing those around me who have enrolled as working professionals in doctoral programs, I see that they are flexibly advancing their doctoral research in a way that suits their work styles. Depending on your career plan, please consider a doctoral program as one of your options.
